EDUCATION FUTURES

Expanding Teacher Preparation Programs:

Building regionally aligned Teacher Preparation Programs (TPP) to recruit, train and support diverse teachers and ameliorate critical teacher shortages in STEM, CTE and other high need areas.

Practice makes perfect

TPP emphasis is on addressing the critical need in California for teachers with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) backgrounds. California’s demand for new math and science teachers in the next 10 years is expected to exceed 33,000, far surpassing the number of STEM teachers that the state is expected to produce. In addition, an estimated 51,500 openings for elementary school teachers and 31,100 jobs for secondary school teachers will occur statewide between 2010 and 2020. Despite the increased need for new teachers, fewer college students are choosing careers as teachers.

The best campus facilities

The Teacher Prep Center is a project of the Child Development & Family Studies Dept. which also houses an Early Childhood Professional Development Center. Academic counselors and career advisors are available to assist students interested in pursuing careers with children or youth in a variety of settings including TK – 12 classrooms, after-school programs, youth work organizations, early childhood settings, CTE teaching pathways and a range of other venues. Academic courses, certificates, CDEV permits and degrees are available in a range of specialty areas.  Transfer support is available to a variety of colleges and universities and SFSU continues to be the primary transfer university for CCSF graduates.
